Celebrating World Press Freedom Day with .PRESS Domains
UNESCO has commemorated 3rd May as World Press Freedom Day. The event celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom globally as well as offers an opportunity to evaluate the state of press freedom the world over. Another integral element of World Press Freedom Day is to defend the media from attacks in the line of duty and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives along the way.
A movie by Journeyman Pictures that captures why World Press Freedom Day is crucial in all corners of the world. What was the beginning of World Press Freedom Day?
The date, May 3rd, was proclaimed World Press Freedom Day the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991.
What does World Press Freedom Day stand for?
It serves as an occasion to inform citizens of violations of press freedom – a reminder that in dozens of countries around the world, publications are censored, fined, suspended and closed down, while journalists, editors and publishers are harassed, attacked, detained and even murdered.
It is a date to encourage and develop initiatives in favour of press freedom and to assess the state of press freedom worldwide.
It serves as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and is also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics.
How is Radix supporting the World Press Freedom?
.PRESS domains, operated by Radix, stand to empower journalists to put out their stories on the Internet freely. To facilitate that, we will offer .PRESS Domains at a highly subsided price during the campaign period and enable the journalists to build stronger identities online.
As an extension to the campaign, .PRESS has officially partnered with Society of Professional Journalists and will be donating a part of its earnings in the month of May 2018 to support their work towards improving and protecting journalists. Founded in 1909, SPJ currently has 7500+ members on board which makes it the largest association of professional journalists in the US.
3rd May, commemorated by UNESCO as World Press Freedom Day, stands to uphold the freedom of expression for the press. It serves as a reminder that every story needs telling without fear. After all, freedom of expression is critical for demonstrating dissent, guaranteeing a free press, and defending human rights.
